Review:

Many young people's minds are boggled by what they see around them. What confronts them on a daily basis are numerous illusions of what life is all about. Many schools have become weekday baby sitters where performance is unimportant -- just get them through. The mentality of many of today's youth is just to "hang out" whether at school or with their peer group. They observe the rebellious youth in movies and TV and conclude that life is about partying and doing drugs. Many youngsters drift aimlessly through the most important years of their lives. Although told by their peers to "Get a life!" they haven't a clue on how to do this.

How To: GET A LIFE! is a common sense guide for today's youth which describes how many happy and successful people "got their life." Without employing guilt trips, the book discusses the authors' 3-D approach of how to make correct Decisions and how using Discipline and Determination can change a shallow one-dimensional "hang out" life style to a rewarding three-dimensional life of contentment, happiness and success. This book is written for the post baby boomers (PBB) and X Generation, mostly people between sixteen and thirty years old. It often uses familiar movie themes, humorous antidotes and cartoons to illustrate salient points. There is a message in the book for everyone regardless of age.

EXCERPTS

"The 'Back to the Future' model is a very graphic illustration of how a single event in the past can have two very different outcomes which may have an enormous impact on our future. When you're faced with an important decision, it should be an easy model for you to remember."

"The 'bottom line' is that everyday we face many decisions, some of which can have an enormous impact on our future, such as the example of the drunk driver. You don't have to kill someone to make a major impact on your life or others' lives. For even seemingly harmless decisions (like skipping school, or smoking a little pot, etc.) may also bring about devastating consequences. To repeat, the best policy in life is:

Make every decision as if your life depends on it because in fact, it does!

"Here's where my 3-D approach to life can come into play. If you are making decisions now based on the 3-D approach, you have already told yourself that no matter how drunk or stupid or horny you get, you will always practice safe sex. You make this resolution when you are sane and sober. And when you really need it (that is, when you're high, horny and uninhibited) the decision will have already been made and even though you have compromised your own good common sense, you are very likely to practice safe sex."

"Lastly, you don't have to go to a mountain top in Asia and talk with a mystic or guru to gain inner serenity. As Luke Skywalker learned in the Star Wars movie trilogy, he always had 'the force' within him."

"After listening patiently to his son's lengthy harangue about how tough he had it, General (Jimmy) Doolittle gave his son a simple admonishment.

'Son, no matter what happens to you, never lose your sense of humor.'
