REVIEW

There’s nothing quite like waking to the sound of birds, the wind in the trees or the gentle rush of waves along the beach to make a vacation what it should be … perfect.  How about the appealing charm of a bed and breakfast with its warm and welcoming innkeeper greeting you like an old friend … welcome home

The newest, 8th edition of the Michigan Vacation Guide 2005-06: Cottages, Chalets, Condos, B&B’s continues the home-away-from-home theme and now features more than 400 individual property owners, innkeepers and managers representing several thousand rentals across Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas.

In addition to regional listings, the “Property Reviews” chapter includes over 100 pages with 26 featured properties the writers have specially selected (reviews include complete photo layouts). A brief sampling of some of the 26 reviewed properties include:

…. Mackinac Island. Stay at the former home of Dr. John R. Bailey, Fort Mackinac’s highest-ranking officer and surgeon. His restored home is now a lovely B&B. Perhaps you’d prefer something even more private? Then head to this secluded West Bluff condo and enjoy scenic grounds and quiet comfort with a view of the Mackinac Bridge.

Burt Lake. You’ll never find this one on your own! A charming little upstairs cottage, surrounded by trees, a private sandy beach, and your own pedal boat and canoe. Very affordable!

Traverse City/Spider Lake. Hang out by the lake all day and relax on the private deck or head inside to enjoy the pool table (don’t sink that 8 ball) at this private, lakefront vacation home. Another one you won’t find on your own.

Caseville. An old-time cottage resort has a new face. The writers were really impressed with the quality of renovations at this long-time resort along the shores of Lake Huron … lovely and affordable!

Ahmeek/Copper Harbor. Stay at the “Castle of the Kewenaw” … a restored lighthouse B&B resting along a remote stretch of Lake Superior.

Pentwater. Romance is in the air at this historic B&B.  Enjoy a romantic, candlelight dinner then head upstairs to your Jacuzzi suite.

South Haven. This 1937 resort sprawls along 30-acres of private lands overlooking Lake Michigan. The resort’s original cottages have been torn to the ground and amazingly resurrected into luxury cottage living.  The first owner named the resort in honor of his good friend, Washington Irving.

Additional features in the book include:  Regional attractions/restaurants, wineries, casinos, fall color tours and favorite golf courses.

“Think you know vacation spots in Michigan pretty well? Bet the Michigan Vacation Guide can steer you to a couple of places you've never heard of. It's a dandy paperback that is a guide to cottages, chalets, condos and B&Bs throughout Michigan.

A couple a years ago, my family followed the recommendation to a listing at Spider Lake near Traverse City, and it was everything the guide had promised. Even if you're like me and have had a lifetime of vacations in Michigan, this book is loaded with good ideas and enough information to make vacation plans.”

EDITORIAL COMMENTS:

"I found the book incredibly helpful. We had been perusing the Web exclusively without much luck ... the listings just seemed to be scattered everywhere...(who says the Web is faster?) I had all but given up when I received your book....

Your book has a permanent place on my desk and is frequently used by my colleagues."

Karen Sharp, Travel Editor

"It’s easy to find information on national lodging chains that have hotels or motels in Michigan. But good luck to you if you try to find similar information on small rental units or inns. Michigan Vacation Guide - Cottages, Chalets, Condos, B&B’s is one of precious few publications detailing rental properties statewide."
