Review:

From Regina Pomeranz Krummel, author:

I have written the chapbook …And I Answer…  because I have taught incarcerated young men in the U.S. and U.K. for over fifteen years.  This book of poetry is dedicated to some of those who have become friends.  They are silenced from childhood by neglect, misery and poverty.  I send money each month for books, pens and art supplies.  The poetry helps us to create a voice through shattering the silence of imprisonment.

 From Lee C. Downing, illustrator:

I have had the unforgettable experience of observing Dr. Krummel in her work in prison.  Her poetry reflects her deep understanding of the nature of incarceration.  I was moved after reading her poetry …And I Answer… to create the drawings for her book – a visual rendition of the complex prisons we all confront in our lives.

And I Answer

Poems by Regina Pomeranz Krummel with Illustrations by Lee C. Downing

Each poem in the And I Answer collection is a piece of her own flesh, reflecting the author’s actual life experiences. In every poem, Regina speaks with her own voice, sometimes triumphant, sometimes defeated, with the compassion for her subjects genuine.  The first few poems are clearly influenced by her experiences teaching English at Rikers Island School, which is a prison in New York City.  Other works reflect her past experiences; one which stood out is her vivid recollections of her old school (PS 115).  Knowing Regina as well as I do, in reading each of these poems, I hear her voice speaking it in verse, as if she’s is speaking directly to me.  While writing this, I wonder if others can hear it the way I do.
