One of the most painful experiences I recall from those days happened one afternoon in August of 1985. I had gone with my parents to my uncle’s funeral in Montana. After the service a meal was provided at a community hall and most of the people who had attended the funeral stayed to eat. After the meal, I joined the other children playing among the vehicles on the parking lot.  It seemed that everywhere I turned someone was informing me I was fat. Feeling overwhelmed, I knew I was going to cry, so I moved between two full-size vans in hopes that I could be hidden from the mocking eyes.  I was discovered almost immediately. A teenage girl saw me cowering between the vans and moved purposefully toward me. An impish smirk was on her face, and . . .
