Chapter 1

THE PRETTY, DEADLY FLOWER

The homicide department of Brooklyn's Sixth Precinct knew that Lieutenant Harry Stockman had a way with women, especially the high class like Audrey Barton. The fact that she was well endowed was clearly shown by the summer issue of Vogue magazine's swimsuit edition.

Since Harry Stockman had a face that looked like it was bumped around by too many one on ones, the reason for his success with the ladies puzzled the younger cops. The old timers knew the answer through the necessary visits to the precinct john.

Harry was a ten year survivor on the police force because he was meaner than all the mean streets around Bensonhurst.

"You look like shit Harry" that was Doc Phillips talking. Old Doc was Brooklyn's head coroner. He was somewhere between seventy and eighty years old with a round cherubic face that never aged beyond fifty. Doc was bald, and his skull sloped like the downhill run at St. Moritz. Everyone believed that he wasn't aging because he spent so much time in the clinically perfect atmosphere of the morgue. Another factor was that Doc Phillips was never under stress because he liked his job. Why not? His malpractice insurance was very reasonable.

"Just one of those days, Doc," Harry said, "Began around six this morning with a hooker getting wasted by her pimp. Went downhill after that."

"You should get a transfer to Queens, maybe Westchester," Doc said, pulling the sheet from a cadaver, "you know, a nice neighborhood with nice people."

"And do what? Check out church bingo games? Who is he?" Harry added pointing to the corpse.

"Don't you recognize him? You should--it's Manny Palermo."

"The hood who used to run with the Vito mob? Heard he joined Uncle Chen's boys," Harry said.

"I don't ask for a resume when they cart them to the morgue," Doc said, opening his medical bag.
