Review:

Overview:

The authors of Frontiers of Justice, Volume 1: The Death Penalty have been touched by capital punishment personally (the inmates, their families and their victims' families) or professionally (in the areas of law, criminal justice, government, religion, journalism and advocacy). This powerful anthology represents men and women of reason and conscience, both the incarcerated and the free, who deplore the use of legalized killing to solve America's criminal justice problems.

Excerpts:

- DOES THE DEATH PENALTY DETER CRIME?

"It doesn't deter. That used to be the argument. Does it deter? Doesn't it? You would come with your records, they would come with their books. They would cite authorities. You would cite authorities. No more. There's not even a pretense any more. Nobody seriously says, 'Well, if you do this, the crime rate will go down,' because all the evidence is the other way.'

- Mario Cuomo, Former Governor of New York

- DOESN'T THE VICTIM DESERVE AN 'EYE FOR AN EYE?'

"Loved ones who have been wrenched from our lives by violent crime deserve more beautiful, noble and honorable memorials than premeditated, barbaric, state-sanctioned killings, which only make more victims and more grieving families ... We violate our own honor and dignity by unabashedly killing a chained, restrained, defenseless person, however deserving of death we deem that person to be. We become that which we deplore -- people who kill people -- an insult to the memory of our beloved victims."

- Marietta Jaeger, Mother of Murder Victim

Reviews:

- Edward Asner:

"Frontiers of Justice does a phenomenal job in bringing together a mass of eloquent anti-death penalty accounts and views. We hear the view of an inmate, a witness, a corrections veteran, a Native American demonstrator, in addition to fine words from my friend and teacher, Mike Farrell.

As long as we command the state to perform executions for us, we perpetuate the act of murder We show little inclination to comprehend the fallibility of the death penalty. We are cold. If ever we wish to change, this book will be part of the reason why. "

- Hugh McDiarmid, Detroit Free Press:

"...remarkably poignant and fact-filled new anti-capital punishment anthology, Frontiers of Justice. I especially recommend the Jaeger chapter. It's short and concludes by saying if we condone capital punishment, 'we become that which we deplore -- people who kill people -- an insult to the memory of our beloved."'

- Helen Prejean, CJS, Author of Dead Man Walking:

"Just as now we're curious about slavery and segregation and how it was when women couldn't vote, so, too, when the death penalty is abolished and execution chambers are consigned to museums, then people will be eager to know the real stories about what happened. Frontiers of Justice brings you those real inside stories from people who have had a lived experience of the death penalty. Get this book for yourself and for your grandchildren. This is and will be considered a very valuable book."

About the Publisher:

Julie Zimmerman owns a small publishing company which specializes in books on prison issues. This work has introduced her to many prisoners, including men on death row. She has helped several of them get their writing and poetry into print. She says, "The easiest part of the friendships that have developed is recognizing that of God within each of them-it amazes me how, even in the horror of prison, they can blossom with intelligence, humor, generosity and creativity. The hardest part is knowing that I will lose some of these new friends to execution. It is my greatest hope that my newest project Frontiers of Justice can help to change this country's criminal justice policy."
