Review:

Overview:

"Funny, you don't look like a warden..."

As warden of a men's maximum security prison, Tekla Dennison Miller was to hear these words many times. The Warden Wore Pink tells her 20 year career in corrections, and introduces us to the best and the worst among prison administrators, employees and inmates. Warden Miller's story is a sometimes shocking, some times hilarious, and always honest examination of the world of criminals and criminal justice. The Warden Wore Pink relates one woman's courageous journey into a difficult, dangerous, often hostile career environment. It is a source of inspiration for all women battling gender stereotypes, and a lesson to all Americans that a secure, well-managed prison is synonymous with a humane one.

Review

- Lowell Cauffiel, True-crime author of Masquerade and Eye of the Beholder:

"Go out and commit a major felony. That's about the only way you'll come close to getting the kind of prison tour Ms. Miller offers in The Warden Wore Pink. This inside story is gripping, funny, compelling, ironic, sad and heroic -- all the qualities we expect from great fiction. Only her story is all too real."

- Lana Pollack, former State Senator from Michigan:

"It reads like an adventure story but it teaches like a textbook... The Governor and every politician spending a galloping portion of our taxes on prisons and putting a growing number of women and men behind bars should be sentenced to read The Warden Wore Pink."

- Hon. Edward Sosnick Chief Judge, Oakland County (MI) Circuit Court:

"Without wavering in her feminism or belief in human potential, Warden Miller brilliantly describes prison life. Her insights and descriptions will never be forgotten."

- Dr. T. A. Ryan, Criminology Professor Emeritus, Univ. S.C. Member Board of Directors, American Correctional Assoc.:

"This book describes life in prison -- as it really is. It reads like a movie in written form."

- Rita Milios, author of Tools for Transformation

"A 'can't put it down till you're finished' read! Tekla's storytelling ability is matched only by her courage and her ability to inspire."

About the Publisher:

Julie Zimmerman owns a small publishing company which specializes in books on prison issues. This work has introduced her to many prisoners, including men on death row. She has helped several of them get their writing and poetry into print. She says, "The easiest part of the friendships that have developed is recognizing that of God within each of them -- it amazes me how, even in the horror of prison, they can blossom with intelligence, humor, generosity and creativity. The hardest part is knowing that I will lose some of these new friends to execution. It is my greatest hope that my newest project Frontiers of Justice can help to change this country's criminal justice policy."
