REVIEW

The first chapter of the book gives the historical perspectives concerning the origins of the "curse" of alcoholism. References to Biblical and Eastern religions, the theories of evolution, and the views of environmentalists are briefly explored. By examining the historic and individual perspectives of the relationship of sugar and alcohol, the book reaches the conclusion that alcoholism may be an inherited dysfunction of the endocrine system. By eliminating the mysterious "curse" of alcoholism, the reader can achieve a sense that there can be solutions to dealing with this dysfunction.

The second chapter explores the six basic causes of this addiction that have been put forth over the years by various schools of thought. These causes include: Moral Depravity; Lack of Will Power; Psychological Disorder; Physical disease; Genetic Influence; and Nutritional Deficiency. The author examines these causes and places particular emphasis on the genetotrophic (inborn nutritional need) theory.

Chapter three takes a look at the various "cures" available for those seeking help for alcoholism. (Since this is a self-help reference book, discussions of intensive long‑term psychotherapy or private sanatoriums are not included in this chapter.) Special emphasis is placed on the use of the amino acid, L‑Glutamine, in the treatment of alcoholism. Referring to the research done by Dr. Roger J. Williams, University of Texas, the author discusses the benefits of including L. Glutamine in the diet of an alcoholic. The diet and nutrition connection is recognized as having a positive effect on reducing or eliminating the alcoholic cravings that some heavy drinkers experience.

Other "cures" discussed in chapter three are:

General diet for an alcoholic
Vitamin/Mineral therapies and formulas
Herbs
Allergic Addiction (Removal of certain foods from diet)
Hormone Therapy
Alcoholics Anonymous
Hospital Programs
Hypnosis
Drugs (Medicinal)

The final chapter is a discourse on "holic" behavior (the compulsive search for a "high"). This chapter discusses how CHOICE plays a part in an alcoholic's cure. The book concludes with a plea for an honest, intensive, and more expanded drug education program in our schools.
